Fulham’s manager, Marco Silva, couldn’t hide his emotions after their narrow 1-0 defeat to Arsenal. He admitted that while his players gave everything on the pitch, one Arsenal star completely shattered his heart with an extraordinary performance. According to Silva, it wasn’t Bukayo Saka who stole the show this time, but the Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhães — a player he described as “dangerously aggressive” and nearly impossible to contain.
Silva confessed that Gabriel’s dominance during set-pieces made a huge difference in the game. Arsenal’s winning goal came in the 58th minute, courtesy of Leandro Trossard, who converted a chance created from one of Arsenal’s well-rehearsed corners. The Brazilian defender was once again at the center of it all — flicking the ball perfectly at the near post, allowing Trossard to knee it home from close range.
That assist marked Gabriel’s 20th goal involvement for Arsenal since he joined the club in 2020, an impressive record for a center-back. Silva admitted that no amount of planning seemed enough to neutralize his aerial threat. “Gabriel jumps so high, it’s impossible to stop him,” Silva said, sounding both frustrated and admiring at once. “We tried to block his runs, and for most of the match we did it well, but one moment of looseness and he punished us.”
Reflecting on the game, Silva acknowledged that his team created opportunities and even looked dangerous before Arsenal’s goal. However, once the Gunners found their breakthrough, Fulham struggled to regain control. Arsenal’s defensive discipline and ability to transition from defense to attack left Fulham chasing shadows for much of the second half.
Silva went further to explain that Arsenal’s strength in offensive set-pieces is not accidental. He credited both their technical quality and tactical preparation. “It’s not just about one or two players,” he said. “Their delivery is top level, and that gives players like Gabriel the perfect chance to cause damage.”
He also pointed out that Arsenal’s consistency from dead-ball situations has been one of their key weapons this season. “I think they’ve scored around 60 percent of their goals from set-pieces,” Silva noted. “That alone shows how dangerous they are in those moments.”
The Fulham boss admitted that his side had spent the week preparing for such scenarios and that for most of the game, they managed to execute their plan. But one moment of lost focus against a player like Gabriel can change everything. “You have to stay sharp for the full 90 or even 95 minutes,” he emphasized. “We did well for most of it, but he only needs one second of space to hurt you.”
Silva concluded his comments by praising Arsenal’s resilience while acknowledging his team’s progress. “It’s frustrating, yes,” he admitted, “but that’s football. We were organized, committed, and brave. Still, Gabriel found his moment — and when a player like that decides to rise, sometimes there’s just nothing you can do.”
